Hi Friends,
A new chapter to life, my first blog, have no experience on
writing anywhere other than my mails for office communication which is a
different talent altogether, the start is so difficult, I have to think so much
for the start and I couldn’t get anywhere, but then introduction should work.
So here I’m Mr Somnath Pradeep Pal, born and brought up in
Mumbai, have graduated in Arts from Mumbai University, work in Mumbai for an IT
Company, a hobbyist & water lily hybridizer & just like any average person
on earth, Simple, down to earth, straight forward & at times hurt people
too, but my blog isn’t about myself, in fact that would be a boring both for
you and me; the blog is about my details on my passion and I am sure it is very
few from India & across world people participate and do & that is
“Water lilies”,
As a child I was very active and as an adult I’m still
trying to be as active as I can. I was doing gardening since childhood, saving
my little pocket money and buying roses, experimented with many plants and
killing them with my poor hands on fertilization but one fine day things
changed, I went to a Plant Nursery saw some Water lilies and you can say that
was my love at first sight, no second thought not till date that it is one of
my closest in heart; I couldn’t able to buy water lilies then, had no money but
I swore to keep water lilies with me and with God grace I hold some breath
taking water lilies now, in fact I became a hybridizer and now I create my own
water lilies.
A simple definition about water lilies would be, Water
lilies are an aquatic plant, face in water and foot on mud; the example gave my
millions of parents & teacher to us when they refer to water lilies that we
all need to be like them, no matter from where we come from we should always
look and reach to sky and when water lilies bloom they look heavenly, their
fragrance will reach to your soul, when you stare them you will feel peaceful,
relaxed and joyful. I find myself whenever I spend my time with them, I talk to
them & they talk to me back. I know when they are in stress and maybe at
times my own hand doesn’t give them what they want just like a baby doesn’t get
everything from a parent. A love, irreplaceable.
Water lilies are also very easy to grow, you can grow in a
container, you can create a pond or you can enjoy them in natural pond. They do
not like moving water. They are beautiful and with many hybrids from breeding
you may say we have thousands and thousands of water lilies in the world but
wait! How many you think we have ever seen or come across in India, no we haven’t much but we are gradually learning a
great deal and my motive to start this blog is just not to educate them about
water lilies but to fill their heart with love the same I hold for them and
then see the potential of India.
I am ending this blog on a note that people will appreciate
and would take interest to know this more & I promise that I will come with
more knowledge and details on my next blog. This was just an introduction &
I hope you like it. Keep your comments open for suggestion and watch some of my
collections

DeleteThe thrill of seeing waterlillies bloom is indeed a rewarding experience. It certainly teaches you patience if nothing else!
ReplyDeleteYour blog is a great step and much needed. While a lot of videos are available on You Tube on growing waterlillies , there is hardly anything on growing waterlillies in the Indian Environment, with temperatures raging to 46 degrees in summer months in the North.
We look forward to you sharing your experiences which will help spread the water lilly culture in India.Thank you for taking the initiative of educating us.

ReplyDeleteDear Somnathji,
ReplyDeleteI had ordered some seeds about 2-3 years back (I think it was from eBay.in from your nelimaonestopgardening. The germination was very good, but unfortunately they didn't grow up thereafter.
This I feel is due to either me planting them at the wrong time, or placing them in the wrong position, allowing algae to grow.
I shall go through your blog and others if I feel like trying to grow them from seed. However, I have a question or two:
1. Your lilies are not listed on the online selling sites; how does one order if one would like to?
2. Do you also sell rhizomes (those would guarantee 100% success)?
I stay at Ahmedabad and at present have 2 types of water lilies (common types - one pink, and the other purple viviparous day blooming).
The waterlilies displayed on your blog are very beautiful.
With regards,
Tariq Desai
